Stephan Smith

MBA, CFA
Chief Investment Officer

Stephan draws upon an extensive and accomplished finance career in his role as Chronicle’s Chief Investment Officer to set clients’ asset allocations, research and select suitable investments, and monitor their portfolios on an ongoing basis.

Prior to joining Chronicle, Stephan was a portfolio manager at 1832 Asset Management – the investment management arm of the Bank of Nova Scotia – where he was part of a team that managed several billion dollars of retail mutual funds and institutional equity pools. While at 1832, Stephan was twice named by Brendan Wood International as one of Canada’s TopGun Buyside Investment Minds.

Prior to joining 1832, Stephan worked as an equity analyst with a boutique investment counselling firm for high net worth individuals and as an investment banker with JPMorgan and CIBC in Toronto and New York, respectively. His background also includes experience with McKinsey & Company and a large European hedge fund.

Stephan has an MBA from London Business School (London, UK), where he received one of two entrance awards for North American students and graduated on the Dean’s List. In addition, he has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen’s University, where he served as President of the Commerce Society and graduated near the top of his class. He also holds the CFA designation.

When he is not in the office, Stephan enjoys spending time with his wife, Carolina, and their two young boys, J.P. and Alexander, as well as travelling to sunny Colombia to visit Carolina’s family.
